Why Health?

If I were to ask you what your earliest memory of learning about health is, depending on what era you were born, you might think of running the mile in P.E. class, learning about the different food categories from the food pyramid, or remember being told that an apple a day keeps the doctor away. If any of those ring a bell for you, you might recall some moments that sparked curiosity (e.g. why are some foods good, while others are bad?), annoyance (e.g. I don’t like running), or even fear (e.g. will I get sick if I don’t eat an apple everyday?). My earliest memory of learning about health is being inspired to become a doctor one day to heal others.

I began my pre-med studies by studying biology in college and everything was seemingly going according to plan. However, when the Covid-19 pandemic hit in 2020 during my last semester, the world changed. Shortly after graduating, I started working in healthcare and became overwhelmingly aware of the fear around health. Patients were lining up for hours outside of our clinics and our phones were ringing off the hook with questions and concerns about Covid. This is when I became passionate about learning more about mental health and decided to pursue my master’s degree in psychology.

What the Health…

Maybe it was my frontal lobe fully developing at 26 years old, or maybe it was the fact I was learning so much about mental health, but this is when I had a huge ‘aha’ moment. I began paying closer attention to my own physical and emotional patterns and noticed that my mood and body would fluctuate according to my menstrual phase. I felt like I had just discovered the secret to the universe! I started to talk to other women about this and every single one of them said they had the same experience. I wondered if everyone I know is dealing with this, why aren’t we learning how to optimize these symptoms? Even further, why was menstruation and female sex hormones such a minor topic discussed when I was studying biology and psychology?

This is when I delve nose deep into the women’s health research surrounding hormones. To much of my surprise, a lot of the data was recent and limited. I learned that this was because that women were not included as participants in much of medical research studies and are still overwhelmingly underrepresented. The taboo surrounding women’s health and the historical lack of female leadership in medicine also resulted in minimal funding for research and education on disorders that predominantly affect women (e.g. PCOS, autoimmune disorders, endometriosis, menopause, and so many more). After learning all of this, I vowed to dedicate my career to women’s health research and advocacy.

The Health Experience is born.

If any of this is striking a nerve in you, know that you are not alone and this is exactly why I created, The Health Experience (aka THE, sounds like “thee”). THE is a revolt against traditional health research and education models and seeks to encompass the holistic nature of women’s health that includes hormone health, mental health, and maximizing the human experience. To me, health is so much more than diet and exercise, it’s fostering fulfilling relationships, prioritizing time for yourself, quitting your toxic job, discovering new hobbies, breaking up with draining friends, having unconditional self-love, treating your body like a temple, finding what makes you feel good, ditching toxic cosmetics and products, leaning into your hormonal rhythms, and so much more!

THE blog is here to provide more than tips and tricks, it’s a space to inspire transformation, connection, and empowerment.
